We're by no means experts on European commercial vehicles, but it would seem that White Van Men on the continent are about to be inundated with new product choices, while their Stateside counterparts continue to make due largely by choosing between a Dodge/Freightliner Sprinter, Chevrolet Express/GMC Savana, or Ford's jurassic Econoline. In just the past month or so, we've seen a fresh-faced Volkswagen Crafter and Fiat's new Ducato (along with its Citroen Jumper and Peugeot Boxer twins), and now Vauxhall is set to market a revamped Vivaro.The Vauxhauler receives an exterior once-over, keeping its distinctive bubble roofline, but adding new light fixtures front and rear and a new V-shaped grille.

The future of more than 5,500 UK workers looked uncertain this morning after the US Senate yesterday rejected a $14 billion bailout for the American car industry.

Vauxhall, the British carmaker which directly employs around 5,500 people and has two main plants in the UK, is owned by General Motors (GM), one of the 'big three' US carmakers which had appealed to the US Government for an emergency rescue package to revive the industry.

Last night, the Senate rejected the plan, spearheaded by GM, Chrysler and Ford, after Democrats and Republicans failed to agree on pay for workers.

Hopes of returning to the issue before January 20, when Barack Obama, the President-elect, takes office, have all but vanished.

GM and Chrysler may not be able to wait until the New Year for support, and could be forced into seeking bankruptcy protection, to buy time, stave off creditors, and look at cost-cutting measures.

There are fears that Vauxhall and Opel, a European GM subsidiary, would be particularly vulnerable in the event of the collapse of the American parent company.

In addition to its 5,500 employees and two main plants - Luton, which makes the Vivaro van, and Ellesmere Port, Merseyside where the Astra is made - Vauxhall has estimated that if GM were to collapse a further 50,000 workers employed by part suppliers, dealerships and local businesses that serve the factories would be hit.

Vauxhall is expected to issue a response to the situation later today.

Last Saturday, The Times reported that it had held secret talks with Lord Mandelson, the Business Secretary, in an effort to secure financial guarantees to protect jobs and support its car-part suppliers and dealerships.

Follow-up talks are thought to have involved other manufacturers with UK plants, including Ford and Honda, who are concerned not to find themselves at a competitive disadvantage.

While it is understood that there might be a possibility of short-term bridging loans for the car industry, the Government is expected to take a cautious approach to bailout requests, and does not want a repeat of the sector-wide nationalisation in the 1970s, which followed long-running woes at British Leyland.
